This is a step by step guideline to help you connect to Internet Express using Windows NT 4.0. It will explain how to set up Dial-Up Networking and the Remote Access System (RAS).

Installing RAS and Dial Up Networking

  1. Log on to the machine with an administrator account. Double click on My Computer then select Dial-Up Networking.
  2. If Dial-Up Networking has not been installed you will be prompted to install it. Click on the Install button.
  3. When Windows NT has finished installing Dial-Up Networking and RAS, you may be prompted to install a modem if you have not already done so.
  4. Select Yes to install a modem. You should see the Install New Modem screen.
  5. Click on the Next button. Windows will check for a modem. When it has finished searching, click on the Next button then on Finish to accept the modem.
  6. Next you will see the Add RAS Device Screen.
  7. Click on OK. At this point you should see the RAS setup screen.
  8. Click on the Configure button. On the Configure screen, select "Dial Out Only" and then click OK.
  9. Click on the Network button. You should see the Network Configuration screen.
  10. Ensure that TCP/IP is the only selected item. NetBEUI and IPX should not be selected. Click on OK. Click on the Continue button. Windows will proceed to install RAS. Dial-Up Networking and RAS are now successfully installed. Click on Restart to restart your computer.

Configuring RAS and Dial Up Networking

  1. Now that Dial-Up Networking and RAS are installed, it is time to configure them. When the computer restarts, double click on My Computer and then Dial-Up Networking. You should see a message indicating that the phone book is empty. Click on OK.
  2. At this point the Phonebook Entry Wizard should start up. Enter "Internet Express" as the phonebook entry name. Click on the Next button.
  3. When the Server screen is shown, ensure that "I am calling the Internet" and "Send my plain text password..." are checked, and that "The non-Windows NT server..." is not checked. Click on Next.
  4. Now you should see the Dial Up Phone Number screen. Enter 0198 331 201. Click on Next, then click on Finish to accept the phone book entry.
  5. Now you should see the phone book with the "Internet Express" entry highlighted.
  6. Click on the More button, and select Edit entry and Modem properties. Click on the Server tab. In Network protocols, ensure that TCP/IP is the only one checked. "Enable software compression" may be checked, but make sure that "Enable PPP LCP extensions" is not selected.
  7. Click on the TCP/IP setting button. Click "Server assigned IP address" and also select "Specify name server addresses". Enter as the primary DNS 203.32.160.10 and as the secondary DNS enter 203.32.166.10. Click on OK.
  8. Select the Script tab. Select "None" as a post dial script is not needed.
  9. Next click on the Security tab. Select "Accept any authentication...". Now click on OK. This should take you back to the Phonebook dial screen. Click on Dial. You should see the Connect screen. Enter your login name in the "User name" field, and your password in the "Password" field. Leave "Domain" blank. If you want Dial-Up Networking to remember your password the next time you dial in and connect, click on the "Save password" box. Click on OK to connect to Internet Express.
  10. Dial-Up Networking should now dial your modem and connect to Internet Express. At the completion of this, you will see a connection successful screen. This means that you have successfully connected to Internet Express and the Internet. Click on OK to close this dialog box.

On a standard NT installation, you will need to update your browser and email clients. Using your current browser go to the Downloads page and download your desired browser. Refer to the setup guide for the browser you downloaded for information on how to set it up.
